Meg Stone is a two- time Olympian competing in the discus for Great Britain and she was a gold Medal winner in the 1982 Commonwealth games. Meg competed in track and field for the University of Arizona and still holds the NCAA discus collegiate record. Meg took the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Arizona in 1984, the first woman to hold such a position. She moved into the same position at Texas Tech in 1994. Meg returned to Track and Field in 1996 as the Associated Head Track and Field Coach at Appalachian State University. In 1999 she returned to her native Scotland to become the National Track and Field Coach, the first woman in Europe to hold a paid National coaching position. Meg has coached several international level athletes including 4 Olympians (throwers, jumpers and sprinters) in both the United States and Great Britain. While working in the University system she also coached many athletes later playing in the NBA, MLB and NFL. Meg has also worked extensively with road cyclist and paralympic groups through Carmichael Training Systems in Colorado Springs. Before moving to ETSU Meg was a Coaching Manager at the USOC in Colorado Springs.
In 2010 the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association awarded Meg the Legend in the Field Award and in 2017 she was awarded the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Meg is CSCS certified and is a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach *Emeritus”. In 2019 she received the PAC -12 Hall of Honor recognition at the Pac 12 Basketball tournament in Las Vegas
Currently Meg is the Director of the Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education at East Tennessee State University.

Michael H. Stone PhD is currently the Exercise and Sports Science Laboratory Director and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at ETSU. Prior to joining ETSU he was the Head of Sports Physiology for the USOC. From 1999 through 2001 he was Chair of Sport at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Stone's service and research interests are primarily concerned with physiological and performance adaptations to strength/power training. Dr. Stone is also an adjunct professor at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, (Physiology), School of Medicine, Johnson City, TN. He has 200+ publications in reviewed journals and has contributed chapters to several texts in the areas of bioenergetics, nutrition, and strength/power training. Additionally, he has co-authored two textbooks dealing with strength and conditioning. Dr. Stone was the 1991 NSCA Sports Scientist of the Year and was awarded the NSCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. He was the recipient of the ETSU award for Distinguish Research Faculty in 2008; and the 2010 recipient of the USOC Doc Councilman award for sports science/coaching service to weightlifting. He is a Fellow of the UKSCA and NSCA and is UKSCA (ASCC) and NSCA certified (CSCS). He has coached several international and national level weightlifters (including one Olympian) and throwers in both the United States and Great Britain.

Satoshi Mizuguchi is an assistant professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and the head coach for the ETSU Weightlifting Team. He was the first to graduate from the ETSU doctoral program in Sport Physiology and Performance in 2012. He received his master’s degree in Exercise Science – Strength and Conditioning concentration from Appalachian State University, NC and his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Winona State University, MN. He has been actively involved in strength and conditioning and sport science and has worked with numerous collegiate sports including soccer, volleyball, softball, football, tennis, golf, gymnastics, and basketball among others. His research interests include athletes’ performance monitoring using vertical jumping, development of strength and explosiveness, measurement and monitoring of total training volume, and weightlifting performance. He is certified by NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) as a CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist).

Marten graduated from ETSU’s Master of Science in Sport Science and Coaching Education program in 2023. Since then, he has worked as the ETSU sport science research coordinator under Dr. Michael Stone. Marten assists master’s and doctoral students with their theses and dissertations by ensuring research instrumentation is functional and by coordinating with the IRB. In addition, Marten coaches high school weightlifters at Science Hill High School as part of a long-term athlete development program. He is happy to contribute to sport and sport science at ETSU as well as grow the sport of weightlifting. Outside of work, Marten enjoys training, the outdoors, and music.

Mike Ramsey Ph.D. has been involved in sports and conditioning nearly all his life. Prior to coming to ETSU he received his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University with emphasis in cardiovascular physiology. Dr. Ramsey’s research interests are primarily involved in enhancing skill performance and cardiovascular conditioning. Throughout his life Dr. Ramsey has participated in a variety of sports including soccer, track and field, swimming, football, baseball, basketball, cycling, golf, volleyball, and tennis. After playing basketball at Sam Houston State University he has continued his involvement in sport by coaching; working with athletes in basketball, tennis, cycling, golf, swimming, and volleyball. He has served as Lab Director of the Human Performance Lab at Sam Houston State University and at the college level he has taught weight training, running, and general conditioning courses.

Dr. Marco Duca is an assistant professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and the director of performance for the Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education at ETSU. He earned a PhD in Integrated Biomedical Research at the University of Milan (Italy), his research was focused on the effects of resistance training modalities on rugby players performance and selection for international competitions. At the university of Milan, he later served as adjunct professor teaching training methods. Alongside his academic training and career, Dr. Duca had worked as strength and conditioning coach for the Italian national rugby union team junior academy and then took the position of sport performance data analyst at Hellas Verona F.C., a professional Serie A football team.

Dr. Daniel Gahreman is an Assistant Professor of Sport Science with a specialized focus on athletic performance. Holding a Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of New South Wales, Dr. Gahreman combines a robust academic background with extensive practical experience in athletic training.
Before joining ETSU, Dr. Gahreman spent several years as a strength and conditioning coach for Northern Territory state and national athletes, helping them achieve peak performance through tailored training regimens. He has coached swimmers, rugby players, weightlifters, AFL players, judokas, and many others. His research interests include optimizing athletic performance, physiological adaptations to resistance training, and the prevention of urinary incontinence during resistance training.
At the university, Dr. Gahreman is known for his engaging teaching style and commitment to student success. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals. Dr. Gahreman is also an active member of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE), contributing to the advancement of the field through both his research and practice.
In addition to his academic and coaching roles, Dr. Gahreman enjoys mentoring students and collaborating with sports teams to implement evidence-based training programs. His dedication to bridging the gap between research and real-world application continues to inspire future generations of sport scientists and coaches.

Kevin Carroll is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation, and Kinesiology at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). Prior to joining the faculty at ETSU in 2019, he was a faculty member at Montclair State University. Kevin received his PhD in Sport Physiology & Performance from ETSU in 2018, and his Master’s from ETSU in 2015. Additionally, Kevin received his Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University (ASU). It was during his time at ASU that Kevin found a passion with strength & conditioning. Over the years he has coached numerous athletes in sports such as football, softball, volleyball, and track & field. Further, Dr. Carroll’s primary research goals aim to discover optimal training and monitoring strategies to improve both athletic performance and the overall preparatory process. Perhaps most importantly, a major focus of his at ETSU is the preparation of our graduate students for careers in sport science, strength & conditioning, and academia. Outside of work, Kevin enjoys playing music or spending time with his wife Shelley and son Mason.
